Identity Theft Protection

  1. Be aware. Be very aware of potential risks and take intelligent precautions.
  2. Check to make sure computer virus software is current.
  3. Limit personal information on social networking sites.
  4. Limit working on your computer in public wi-fi situations.
  5. Be careful of the web sites you visit. Check to see if they have trusted verification (e.g., look for the lock icon next to the check-out cart).
  6. Never respond directly to emails or phone calls asking for information. Call back or go to their web sites.
  7. Shred (rather than toss) any documents with your name or any other personal information on them.
  8. Set up a regular credit report check (every four months to one year). Credit report companies are Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Go to to access free credit reports for all three companies.
  9. Make a list of all credit cards and check monthly statements.
  10. If possible, keep personal and financial records in a locked file.
