What to do if Your Beloved Senior Has Declined: A Client's Story
Letty left New York for Philadelphia by train to visit her sister and brother-in-law last Thanksgiving; but she left four days early. Her sister and brother-in-law noticed during her prolonged stay with them that she was more forgetful. When they returned her to New York, they discovered piles of papers with unpaid bills interspersed throughout. Concerned neighbors were pleased to learn that Letty's family was taking seriously the signs they had already noticed. Eddy & Schein helped locate a home health agency to supervise medications and was hired to help with bill paying and tax filings. While Letty may eventually need more support going forward, the help her family found for her has given her extra years of independent living.

Holidays Can Be the Time to Check in on the Seniors in Your Life
Holidays are often when people have an opportunity to spend time with their seniors and in the process identify changes from the year before and warning signs of diminished capabilities.
They might notice:

•     Repeated stories (if this is unusual)
•     Forgetfulness
•     Non recognition of family members
•     Confusion
•     Unsteady gait
•     Diminished eating
•     Clutter in a home that was clutter-free
•     Less cleanliness of clothes and/or home
•     Regularly scheduled doctor visits missed

If this is the case, plan a strategy to provide help for your senior. Check to see if long-standing holiday traditions are remembered; e.g., holiday gifts and tipping. Verify that all important documents are in place. In addition, read our June Issue to see some of the ways that family and friends can help seniors. Alternatively, there are professionals who can be hired. Our July issue lists professionals who can be of help.

November is National Caregivers Month and Long Term Care Awareness Month

This month we recognize and honor the millions of caregivers across the United States. The Eddy & Schein newsletter is intended to support caregivers in their work.We would like to take this opportunity to wish the Caregivers of the World HAPPY HOLIDAYS - not only during this month, but for the rest of the year.

It is also a good time to think about yourself in relation to the senior in your life. Ask yourself some questions:

•     Am I prepared if my mother has a medical crisis?
•     What if I discover slow deterioration in my great uncle?
•     What help can I provide to my parents?
•     What are my limitations due to family, work, distance, and relationship dynamics?
•     Are my senior's affairs in order?
•     Would someone be able to seamlessly step in and handle finances and medical coordination if my senior cannot?

By planning ahead, long term care plans can be put into place and concerns can be minimized.

Medicare D plans can be changed from November 15 to December 31

You may enroll in or change Medicare D (Medicare's prescription drug program) from November 15 to December 31 with coverage or change beginning January 1. At no other time of the year can you do this. If you need help navigating the confusion of plans, call Eddy & Schein at 212-987-1427 for a free consultation.

The tax year is coming to a close - Will your seniors be ready?

Does your senior know how to help their accountant prepare? Are they receiving a tax organizer from their accountant? Do they know where their deductible documentation is (charitable contributions and medical expenses, for example)? Do they know how to collect 1099s, K-1s, and other income statements?

Do you or a loved one need help gathering documents to send to the accountant? Eddy & Schein can help.
